Each year we ask York shops, restaurants, bars and other businesses to support York Pride, with its message of equal rights for everyone regardless of their sexuality. You can help us by offering an appealing discount to people with a York Pride wristband during the Pride period (Saturday 25th May to Saturday 22nd June 2019), and if you would like, over a longer period or even all year.
In return, we will advertise your business on the York Pride Facebook page and on our website. The scheme will be included in a press release about York businesses that support the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT+) community.
We will also provide a window sticker for your shop or business to show all customers that you are participating. All of this sends a strong message that your business welcomes the LGBT community in York and North Yorkshire, providing a boost for your business and, hopefully, an increase in your customer base.
As York Pride has grown it has received increasing media attention, with coverage on BBC Look North and ITV’s Calendar News, extensive internet exposure including a headline story on BBC online for the Yorkshire region, and regular stories in the LGBT media. We enjoy extensive media coverage in York Press, BBC Radio York and Minster FM. All of this publicity has helped to attract more attention from businesses. In 2015 York Pride won the best community project award in the York Community Pride Awards. This year we are delighted that the major York employer, Aviva, has chosen to be the main sponsor of York Pride.
The York Pride 2019 wristband scheme promises to be even bigger and better than last year, when nearly 70 businesses took part. Your involvement helps us to sell the Pride wristbands and this is one of the main ways in which we fund the annual York Pride event, in addition to supporting other charities in the area.
York Pride 2019 continues the “Raise your Rainbow” theme with major York employers signing up to fly the rainbow flag. We would really like your help with this. We need businesses like yours to help us create a cityscape of rainbows in as many exciting ways as possible to show your support for the LGBT community and for diversity and equality in our city. It doesn’t need to be expensive, for example decorating shop windows, holding a “wear a rainbow” or “bake a rainbow” day etc, and displaying those six colours in a fun and inventive way will really make a difference and bring even more colour and life to our City. We want to see those rainbows raised in time for the York Pride parade through the city and the event on Knavesmire on Saturday 9 June, and ideally for the weeks beforehand.
